Scottish man behind viral blue-black dress illusion charged with trying to kill wife

The Scottish man who gained notoriety in 2015 for his mother-in-law’s controversial, internet-splitting black-and-blue or gold-and-white attire is now being charged with attempting to murder his wife.

The Times reports that Keir Johnston, 38, of Colonsay, Scotland, is charged with participating in a nearly 11-year campaign of severe domestic violence and coercive control that culminated in a suicide attempt.

He is accused of trying to kill Grace by pinning her to the ground and crushing her neck last March as a result of an 11-year campaign of coercive control and domestic violence against her.

He made his court appearance on Monday in Glasgow, Scotland, and asserted his innocence of all charges. Prior to a trial in 2024, the case was continued for another preliminary hearing.

Keir refuted every accusation made against him, including the one that he regularly beat his wife at home before flashing a knife and attempting to choke her.

In addition, there are claims that Grace was pushed against a wall, yelled at, and choked between April 2019 and March 2022.

According to The Times and other media, he is also accused of trying to get inside the car his wife was in, hitting her through an open window, and allegedly putting her in a headlock and dragging her from a bar after she refused to leave with him.

Keir is also accused of isolating Grace from her loved ones and controlling her finances to determine how much of them she could access.

Following the wedding of Grace’s mother, Cecilia Bleasdale, in 2015, the pair went viral after Caitlin McNeill, a friend and wedding guest, shared a photo of the dress on Tumblr.

The outfit seemed to be blue and black in the photograph, according to some members of the Johnstons’ inner circle, while others were certain it was white and gold.

The discussion piqued the interest of online users, who began referring to the garment as “the dress” or “the dress that broke the internet.”

When Bleasdale appeared on the “Ellen DeGeneres Show” wearing the dress that was in fact black and blue, it was so contentious that Keir, Grace, and McNeill even made an appearance.

A preliminary hearing will be held in the attempted murder case prior to a trial in 2024.
