Real Madrid goalkeeper Courtois endures an ACL tear during training.

Thibaut Courtois, a Belgian goalkeeper for Real Madrid, tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee just days before the start of the new season, dealing a devastating blow to the team.

Courtois will have surgery soon, according to the Spanish team.

The 31-year-old shotstopper left the ground in tears after suffering the injury earlier today during a drill session.

Courtois’ absence was not made clear by the team, but sources out of Spain indicate that he will be sidelined for the majority, if not the entire, of the current campaign.

Andriy Lunin, who appeared to be leaving the club, is now the backup goalkeeper for Real Madrid.

Los Blancos will almost certainly search the market for a new goalkeeper, with former Manchester United No. 1 David de Gea standing out among the choices.

On Saturday, Madrid plays Athletic Bilbao in the season opener.

Courtois, a 2018 addition to the Madrid squad, has been essential to his team’s success in recent years, leading it to two LaLiga championships and a Champions League triumph.
