Community Shield: Arsenal defeats Manchester City to “make a statement”

Arsenal won the Community Shield by defeating treble champions Manchester City on penalties, bringing home the first trophy of the new campaign.

Cole Palmer, a substitute, was thought to have won it for City in regulation time with a magnificent curling strike, but an unfortunate last-second own goal by Manuel Akanji gave Arsenal a 1-1 draw and sent the game to a penalty shootout. The Gunners converted all of their penalty kicks, while Kevin De Bruyne’s attempt hit the crossbar and Rodri’s awful attempt was saved by Aaron Ramsdale in the Champions League final.

Similar to this match from a year ago, Erling Haaland had a quiet afternoon, but Palmer, who replaced him, looked poised to add to the Etihad Stadium’s already-full trophy cabinet. Arsenal had their moments and may have earned the goal when a late Leandro Trossard shot took a strong deflection off the unaware Akanji.

After that, Fabio Vieira successfully executed the decisive penalty in the shootout to give the Gunners a 4-1 victory.
