Christmas stink: A growing wave of sewage threatens the UK’s customary holiday swims.

The Liberal Democrats, who advocated for a ban on dumping in bathing places, said that thousands of Britons planning a festive dip would be swimming in sewage-filled waterways.

Swimmers swarm beaches and lakes around the nation on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, and New Year’s Day.

The Liberal Democrats found that there were around 1,000 sewage spills at 32 event locations last year.

A swim on New Year’s Day in Saundersfoot, South Wales, will see the infusion of over a thousand hours of sewage into the sea.

In the meantime, participants in the Boxing Day charity paddle in Cirencester will be wading through waters affected by 67 sewage spills that occurred over 405 hours last year.

The Liberal Democrats claim that 4,574 hours’ worth of sewage were dumped on beachfronts this year, where celebratory swimmers are anticipated.

Tim Farron, the former leader of the party, stated that sewage disposal in bathing areas ought to be prohibited.

The Westmorland and Lonsdale MPs continued, saying that swimmers should only be concerned about the icy water and not the waste floating by them.

According to a Surfers Against Sewage report, there were 1,924 occurrences of suspected sewage pollution-related illnesses over the course of the past year, which is almost three times as many cases as there were the year before.

Mr. Farron attempted to amend the Victims and Prisoners Bill earlier this month to include a new sewage illness compensation scheme, but his amendment was not successful.

The Party’s environmental spokesman, Mr. Farron, declared: “For so many people hoping to enjoy their traditional festive swim, this is a real Christmas stink.” Swimmers shouldn’t have to worry about sewage floating by them; instead, they should only be concerned about the icy water.

The filthy habit has contaminated our lakes and shores, which is abhorrent. Sewage discharges must be prohibited in swimming areas. When will ministers from the Conservative Party finally take action against the environmentally destructive, profit-driven water companies?

It was disturbing to see Conservative Members of Parliament thwarting proposals to pay swimmers who were exposed to sewage. They are happy for swimmers to become ill in addition to allowing them to dump sewage into streams.

Annual sewage flows have affected coastal swimming from Eastbourne, Sussex, to St. Ives, Cornwall.

There’s a fun swimming event in Brighton where swimmers are unaware of the water quality because Southern Water doesn’t check waste.

Oxfordshire river swimmers were forced to postpone their Boxing Day river plunge in 2021 after Thames Water Company declared a sewage release on the holiday.
