Budapest ranking series approved for Vinesh Phogat.

Vinesh Phogat’s first competition since taking home bronze at the World Championships in September will be in Hungary. Vinesh Phogat, a two-time bronze medalist at the World Championships, is anticipated to compete at the Polyak Imre and Varga Janos Memorial match in Budapest early next month. This will be her first match in 10 months. In a meeting on Tuesday between representatives from the government’s TOP plan and the sport’s ad hoc committee, the 28-year-old’s name was cleared.

Vinesh asked us to attend the Budapest event last week because she wants to gradually get back into competing. Since we were always in agreement, we asked UWW (the world organisation) to extend the entry deadline by one week. Then, the due date was extended to June 20. Her trainer and physical therapist have also been given the go-ahead for the July 13–16 competition.

The fourth and final ranking series of the year is the Budapest competition. Bajrang Punia, who won a bronze medal in the Tokyo Olympics, and Sakshi Malik, who won a bronze medal at the Rio Games, have all taken the lead in the wrestlers’ appeal against previous organisation (WFI) head Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh for harassing them sexually.

After meeting with Union Sports Minister Anurag Thakur, the wrestlers decided to call off their sit-in protest, which they had begun in January. The sports ministry established an oversight committee, which looked into the matter and produced a report. On April 23, the wrestlers resumed their Jantar Mantar sit-in after they asked that the Delhi Police file a FIR against Singh.

The wrestlers’ 36-day sit-in came to an end on May 28 when the police detained them while they attempted to march to the new parliament on the day it was inaugurated. The Zagreb, Alexandria, Bishkek, and Bishkek ranking series, as well as the April Asian Championships, were all missed by the three wrestlers.

As other wrestlers train for the Asian Games selection trials, the dates for which are likely to be published soon, Vinesh Phogat may be the only Indian contestant in Budapest.
