Barbie earns $1 billion worldwide at the box office.

In just its third weekend of release, Greta Gerwig’s highly regarded new film Barbie accomplished an amazing feat. With $53 million for a total of $459.4 million, it kept the top spot at the US box office, and when combined with its overseas earnings, it has now surpassed $1 billion.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie, which brought in $1.35 billion worldwide, is currently the biggest film of the year, leaving Barbie in second place. By the end of its lifespan, there’s a good probability that Barbie will reach that number as well.

Last week, Barbie broke the record for the highest-grossing film ever directed by a single woman. It has Captain Marvel to overtake next in terms of live-action films. 2019 saw the MCU film earn $1.13 billion.

Additionally, there’s a chance that Barbie will surpass Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2’s $1.34 billion domestic gross to set the record for Warner Bros.’ biggest film ever.

Barbie is already Warner Bros.’s second-highest grossing film in the US, just behind The Dark Knight’s $535 million total.

Even if the movie has outperformed everyone’s predictions, Margot Robbie always believed Barbie could become a billion-dollar hit.

She told Collider before the film’s release, “I think my pitch in the greenlight meeting was that studios have benefited so much when they’re brave enough to team up a big idea with a visionary director.”

“I presented a series of examples like ‘dinosaurs and Steven Spielberg,’ pretty much identifying anything that’s been amazing and produced a ton of money for the studios throughout the years. And I said, “And now you’ve got Barbie and Greta Gerwig.”

And I believe I overestimated its potential earnings when I promised them it would bring in a billion dollars, but we needed to finish the film.

It turned out that she was completely accurate in her statements.
